  • Introduction: Information on two public meetings to be held on Feb. 22.
The City of Lewisville will hold two public meetings to debut the public art component of the new Multi-Generational Recreation Center and update residents on the project on Thursday, Feb 22. The first meeting will be 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Senior Activity Center, 1950 S. Valley Parkway A. The second meeting will be 6:30-8 p.m. at Medical City Lewisville Grand Theater, 100 N. Charles Street.

Artist Andy Dufford will present conceptual drawings and elevations related to the public art project. Dufford was selected to design the public art components in June 2017. A five-member panel evaluated more than 140 submissions from artists worldwide before unanimously choosing Dufford.

Construction on the $46 million, 87,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to begin in mid-summer 2018. Barring any delays or setbacks, the facility is scheduled to open in early 2020. It will consist of an indoor aquatic facility, multiple gyms, large workout areas, indoor walking track, separate senior activity spaces, classrooms, and outdoor trails and amenities. It will be built on the same property that currently houses the Senior Activity Center and Memorial Park Recreation Center. Eventually, those two facilities will be torn down.

In November 2015, Lewisville residents approved a bond for construction of the new Multi-Generational Recreation Center that included $243,000 for a permanent public art installation. A small portion of the overall project budget was used during the artist selection process. The remaining $230,000 will be dedicated solely to Dufford’s work.
